Greetings from the Department Head

I am grateful to be a part of the Horticulture & Landscape Architecture community.

I am grateful for the impact of this community on human well-being.  We grow nutritious and healthful fruits and vegetables. We create beauty across scales, from a vase to a landscape. We manage parks, golf courses, and sports fields that provide opportunities for exercise. We conceive and construct spaces that protect our environment and calm our minds. We design and install landscapes that bring people together. These professions get at the core of what it means to be human, what it means to be part of a healthy, happy community.

I am grateful that I get to work with such a dedicated and creative faculty and staff. This group of people scattered from the halls of Shepardson to the studios of NESB, from classrooms (physical and virtual) to research centers across the state, are what make HLA special. Their commitment to the well-being and growth of our students and the success and welfare of our stakeholders makes me proud.

I am grateful for our students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are eager to make the world a better place and who challenge our preconceptions and make us think. Our student numbers are growing, from 286 last fall to 340 this fall, an increase of 19%! A chunk of this growth is due to our online degree program in Horticulture Business Management, so our student community is no longer constrained by geographic boundaries.

I am grateful for our alumni. It has been a pleasure to meet many of you in this last year and a half, and I hope to meet many more. I am grateful for your dedication to CSU and especially for your mentoring the next generation of students, providing them with internships and jobs and career advice. The HLA faculty have decided to begin a tradition of presenting alumni from each of our majors (Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, and Environmental/Landscape Horticulture) with Honor Alumni Awards. Please click here to learn more about the honoree selection process and consider nominating yourself or someone else. The deadline is January 15. The HLA Alumni Awards are one small way for us to express our gratitude to you former students who are now our cheerleaders and coaches, encouraging us to be the best we can be for the next generation of students.

I am grateful for you!
